The formula

Interval = base interval for the hardness band, reduced by a quarter for a setpoint at or above 140 F and again for heavy use. Grains per gallon = parts per million / 17.1.

THIS IS A CONVENTION and it is worth being blunt about that. No test procedure publishes a descaling interval. What is published is that calcium carbonate deposition rises sharply with both hardness and surface temperature. Manufacturers say "annually" and then say "more often in hard water" without defining hard, which is the gap this table fills.

Annually is the usual manufacturer guidance, and it is right for moderately hard water. Above about 10 grains per gallon, move to every nine months, and above 15 grains per gallon every six months. A higher outlet setpoint accelerates deposition too, so a unit set to 140 F scales noticeably faster than the same unit set to 120 F.
What can I use to descale a tankless water heater?
Plain five percent white vinegar is what most manufacturers specify, and it costs a fraction of a branded descaler. Circulate about four gallons through the isolation valves for 45 to 60 minutes with a small submersible pump, then flush with clean water. Never use concentrated vinegar above five percent: it is a corrosive hazard to you and to the heat exchanger.
What happens if I never descale?
Efficiency falls first, silently, because a scaled heat exchanger transfers less heat for the same gas so the unit burns longer for the same hot water. Then flow sensors and the exchanger itself begin to fault, typically showing as temperature swings or an error code. At that point the repair is far more expensive than the decade of flushes that would have prevented it.
Do I need isolation valves to descale?
